His name was Michael Brown.

I dreamed about this last night and unfortunately in my dream, the killing of unarmed black youth was beginning to get worse. I remember being in my African American History class in college and we were in the middle of reading a “fictional” novel at the same time Trayvon Martin was killed. The story kind of opened up with how a black boys innocent and requited flirting with a white girl [only once] ultimately led to his death by the hands and gun of her father and brothers. And how his family picked up the pieces and also how the girl and her family’s life ended up being miserable without any of them even going to jail for that crime. I wish I could make a reference stating that this “fictional” novel was set at the very end of the “Slave Emancipation Era” and that’s why there were no consequences but this still goes on in 2014.

I don’t know what/if Michael Brown did anything to prompt an officer to shoot him 8 times while his hands were in the air. But I remember that same semester that Trayvon was murdered, both my African American History [young black woman] and Race & Ethnic Relations [older white woman] professors asked what the value of black life is in this country. I don’t care if Trayvon and Michael had just robbed a bank. Who are you to put a value on someone’s life and take it? The fact Trayvon was simply minding his own business in his family’s neighborhood, which seems to be the same case for Mike, but still got murdered. Problem is an understatement. And the people who wanna justify his murder with “well he shouldn’t have been running” are those same Joan Rivers mentality people I was referring to last night. “Well he shouldn’t have been born a black male in a society where he’s seen as dangerous, a threat, and unimportant just because he has brown skin” is what you really mean.

This is not okay. Before when these stories got media coverage it made people wanna change and do something. For about a two weeks. Then it’s back to life for a good 3-4 months before you hear another unarmed black person being killed by a cop. But lately this has been happening back to back. Which leads me to believe that either we’re starting to get desensitized to this [and some black people already are] because it happens so much. Or we’re about to raise all hell because it happens too much. I hope it’s not the former.

I think it’s both; the former and latter. There are those who are desensitized and those who are sick and tired. The media knows exactly what they’re doing by bombarding us with instances like this back to back. They are subtly backing us into a corner until we are forced to react. There’s a very high possibility that all hell will break lose if we keep hearing about these tragedies.
